ACDSee Pro 6 Review

Good

Very complete suite of editing tools, 30 day free trial, with secure online storage space

Bad

No facial recognition. Lacks Facebook integration. Depth of features fall a ways short of what Abobe Lightroom offers. Windows only application.

Overall

A very complete image editing and cataloging software suite, suitable for professional photographers and amateurs alike

Editor's Ratings

Download Now

ACDSee Pro 6 is a photo editing application that runs solely on the Microsoft Windows platform from XP Service Pack 3 right up to the latest Windows 8. The package is constantly being updated with new features. The latest version 6.3 includes RAW file support for 14 new camera models from Nikon, Olympus, Pentax and Canon.

Free 30 Days Trial

A downloadable 30 day trial version is available from the software developer's home page which is a lightweight download for most people at under 200MB. Other packages can be up to four times this size, so the developer has done well to keep the code base reasonably compact.

64-bit Version

ACDSee Pro 6 now offers a 64-bit version of the software which allows for faster image processing which is something busy photographers will find most welcome. As a result, moving through thumbnails and switching to full screen preview is seemless. It is also possible to filter image metadata and perform searches through photo libraries, which is handled well, but not as fast as some more expensive packages on the market.

Non-Destructive Editing

Late to the party, the latest version includes the non-destructive Develop Brush. This now makes it possible to tweak small parts of an image without damaging the overall image itself. That said, the package only including five color correction processes and it is fair to say that the new feature needs to be fleshed out some more in future updates.

Improved RAW File Processing

Over the previous version, the RAW file processing has been considerably bumped up for the last offering. That said, it still leaves something to be desired. Noise reduction is improved, but loss of detail comes along with it, so it's a bit of a mixed blessing. Also, with a noise reduction filter in place, playing around with other settings will cause the noise reduction to need to be reapplied each time. This can slow the editing process down considerably.

Online Photo Hosting

For making use of the secure online storage space registering an account is required. This is a simple process and users who already enjoy the benefits of having an account can simply add the ACDSee Pro 6 suite to their account. This makes it easy to use all software with just one user name and password

Conclusion

ACDSee Pro 6 has a lot of enjoyable features to try out without being overwhelming. When moving from the amateur to the professional level however, the image processing speed and number of refined editing options do not rival packages like Adobe Lightroom. However, the software does fit nicely at that level below what a professional photo editor would require while using the Windows platform.
