Easy to understand, free, advanced and business plans. Large GB/TB capacities. Encryption with own private key. Multi-platform PC/mobile support.
Doesn't lack any major features we can think of.
iDrive is a surprisingly good cloud storage service with strong private encryption, terabyte storage options and support for external storage devices.
With a name like iDrive, you would think that this is strictly a Mac-focused cloud storage service, but you would be wrong. In fact, the number of supported platforms continues to expand with iDrive. It now supports Windows, Mac, iPhones, iPads, Android (smartphones and tablets), as well as some early support for Linux too.
Backups are performed in real-time as file changes are noted and acted upon. Data that has been deleted can still be accessed for up to 30 days with iDrive which can really save the day when it is needed. True Archive is a feature where unless a file is deleted or you run a 'Archive Cleanup' function, there will always be a copy of every file available to you.
A 256 bit AES encryption level is used to encrypted data before transmission over the internet. The encryption key used is created by the user, not stored anywhere on the iDrive servers, so only people who know the key can decrypt the files later.
There are several accounts for iDrive. There is the usual free account which offers 5GB of cloud storage, the Pro Personal plan which initially offers a generous 150GB's of storage for $49.50 a year, and the Pro Business plan which has expandable storage starting at 100GB's for $99.50.
The Pro Personal plan can go all the way up to 1,000GB's which is just shy of 1TB for the princely sum of $299.50 a year. The Pro Business plan goes up to 2,000GB's for $1,499.50 a year.
The Pro plans offer access to many more features than the free account permits.
Features include backup from multiple computers and devices, and wider access via a web browser or mobile apps (iPhone, iPad, and Android). Files that are presently in an opened state will also be backed up with the Pro plans. Network drives, external drives and NAS devices will additionally be included in the latest cloud backup.
Remote management is also possible to start and monitor the progress of a backup.
For the socially minded, you can also share chosen files on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, or share a link thorough email.
With the Pro Business plan, operating system support is extended beyond consumer versions of Windows and Mac OS X, to Windows Server editions. These include Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Windows 2003 Server, Windows 2008 Server, Windows 2012 Server, and the Windows Home Server.
Sub accounts can also be created to permit other users direct access to your cloud storage facility. This is a great option for small teams and co-workers who need to collaborate.
Offline backups can be created up to 1TB and dispatched to the customer for off-site storage outside of the cloud storage system. This is charged at $59.99 each time for Pro Personal customers, but free for Pro Business customers.
iDrive is far less known that other cloud storage services like Dropbox and Carbonite, yet it has a thoughtful collection of storage plans which are very appealing. Storage limits are generous with several levels to move up to under both Pro plans. The service can also be tried out, excluding the more advanced Pro features, using the free version which is adequate to give the iDrive interface a try to see how you like it.
