eGnyte is taking the latest ideas about cloud storage and giving them a twist. The cloud storage offering is firmly aimed at the business end of the market with their cloud server solutions.

Their Egnyte HybridCloud product is a serious office solution for multiple industry corporate participants that want to ensure that their data is backed up off-site, and also accessible globally.

Solutions

The HybridCloud comes in three versions: Office, Business and Enterprise.

Office is for 5-24 employees with 1TB of storage at a $8 per employee monthly fee (annually charged). Business is for 25-100 employees with 2TB of storage at a $15 per employee monthly fee (annually charged). The basic feature set is somewhat limited but would still be useful for small businesses with file storage and sharing requirements that do not need extensive network access across multiple office locations & other advanced features.

Enterprise includes all the enterprise-level features one would expect and pricing is variable depending on requirements. Custom plans are offered at this level.

Storage Options

Unlike other cloud storage web apps or packages that offer only online storage, eGnyte has made this service far more flexible than that.

Storage can operated in one of two ways:

  1. Cloud using the Egnyte file server.
  2. Hybrid Cloud (cloud and local storage).

The local storage option is capable of using storage devices already present such as NAS, SAN or directly-attached devices to store a virtually unlimited number of files.

Cloud storage uses hosted systems like Amazon's S3, Azure and the Netapp Storage Grid to provide robust cloud solutions that can really scale up when needed.

Permissions Control

The cloud storage includes permissions that can be granted or revoked right down to the folder level. User and group file access can be controlled individually. Audit reporting along with respected LDAP/AD authentication methods ensure that permissions are controlled carefully and can be centrally managed & reviewed as needed.

User Capacity

The number of users who can use the system concurrently can run into the thousands ensuring sufficient access for some of the largest businesses in the world. Indeed, the service is used by large corporations like Intel, IKEA, Cisco, Yamaha, Bauer, and over 30,000 other businesses just like them.

Mobile Apps

The Enterprise App offers access to the Egnyte HybridCloud on the move. There are apps for the iPhone/iPod touch, iPad, Android (smartphones & tablets), Kindle, Nook, Windows Phone and the HP webOS Touchpad.

Be aware though that different levels of functionality exist depending on which mobile app you are using. Apple's iPad has the most supported features and the Windows Mobile has the least.

Other Benefits

Employees, contractors and executives on the road can remove the need to deal with proxy servers, VPN entanglements, and unreliable cloud service providers, and instead enjoy faster speeds than possible with shared, less scalable cloud solutions.
