Carbonite is one of the few cloud storage players that offers unlimited storage.  They originally had a home use plan, but have now expanded into business accounts with support for 3 or more computers being backed up, as well as computer servers and external drives. This opens up a lot more possibilities for a service that was well liked but considered limited because of its original restriction to a single PC.

In fact, Carbonite now have three home versions and two business ones. Lets explore these further.

Home, Home Plus and Home Premier Plans

Unlimited file storage is the order of the day with the three home-based cloud storage products. All systems are limited to Windows and have no Mac option (except for the Home version). Also, only one computer can be used with the service, so if you have more than one PC at home like a desktop and a laptop, then this product line may not be for you.

The Home package is your basic cloud storage service. The Home Plus package adds support for external drives and mirror image backup. The Home Premier package goes a step further with support for automatic video backups and even a U.S. based file courier service.

Prices run from $59.99 to $149.99 per year for the different versions.

Business and Business Premier Plans

The Business package is available for Windows or Mac offering 250GB's of storage for $229.99 (additional storage can also be purchased). Automatic backups, access anywhere, simple file recovery, a web-based dashboard, U.S. based support and support for unlimited PCs, external drives & NAS devices. The data is also encrypted before it is send over the net, which makes the service HIPAA compliant too.

The Business Premier package adds support for the backup of an unlimited number of Windows Servers and boosts storage levels up to 500GB's for just $599.99 per year.

Windows Explorer Integration

Windows Explorer is fully integrated with the Windows version so files that have been backed up display with green dots, files awaiting backup show as orange dots, and white dots with a green border indicate folders with only partially backed up files. There is also a system tray app which is used to delve into the Carbonite options further.

Trial Version

The Carbonite software is available on a 15 day free trial which is well worth considering if you want to take it for a spin.
